Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

A Craftsman weather seal replacement in Ventura typically runs $90 – $180 installed when we do it, with the part itself accounting for $25 – $60 depending on your door’s width and the seal profile. Most Ventura garages need this done every 3 – 5 years because the coastal air and afternoon sun work the rubber harder than inland climates do. You’ll usually notice it the first time: daylight sneaking under the door, a line of dust and leaves just inside the threshold, or a garage that gets noticeably warmer by 2 p.m. in July.

The weather seal (often called the bottom seal or astragal) is the rubber strip that runs along the bottom edge of your garage door. It’s held in place by an aluminum retainer channel, and when it hardens, cracks, or tears, it stops doing its one job: keeping Ventura’s wind-blown grit, rain, and rodents out of your garage. On Craftsman doors specifically, the retainer profile matters more than the rubber itself, which trips up a lot of owners who order a generic seal online and find it won’t seat correctly.

We stock Craftsman-compatible bottom seals on our trucks and can usually replace one same-day. Aaron Teague has been at this long enough to know that a weather seal looks like a small job but is exactly the kind of thing that gets butchered by guesswork. Tell you what’s broken, tell you what it costs, show up when I said I would – that’s the whole job.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors were sold primarily through Sears for decades, and the brand covers a wide range of residential door series. The weather seal compatibility question almost always comes down to two things: the retainer channel type and the door width. Most Craftsman doors built after about 1995 use either a T-style channel or a U-style channel, and they are not interchangeable. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Ventura: a T-style rubber will slide out of a U-channel over time, and a U-style rubber will jam inside a T-channel. The door still opens, but the seal fails within weeks.

For OEM replacement, Craftsman’s own seal part numbers generally cross-reference with the door’s original manufacturer (many Craftsman-branded doors were built by Clopay, Amarr, or Wayne Dalton under contract). That means an OEM Craftsman-labeled seal and a quality aftermarket equivalent from the same door manufacturer can be functionally identical. We carry both, and we’ll match the seal to your specific retainer, not just to the Craftsman name on the panel.

If you want to identify what you have before calling: look for a label on the inside edge of the door panel or on the track brackets. It’ll list a model number and sometimes a serial. Measure the width of the retainer channel opening with a tape measure. If you can send us a photo of the channel end-on, even better – that tells us everything we need before we arrive.

We also stock weather seals for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie opener installations, since opener replacement and door sealing often go together.

Signs Your Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement Is Failing

  • Daylight visible under the closed door. The most obvious one. If you can see a sliver of light along the floor line, the seal has either compressed beyond recovery or pulled free from one end of the retainer. In Ventura’s dry season, this is also how scorpions and field mice find their way inside.
  • A cracked, brittle, or chalky rubber surface. UV exposure breaks down EPDM rubber over time. When you touch the seal and it leaves black residue on your fingers or feels hard instead of springy, the material has lost its flexibility. It will only get worse.
  • Water pooling inside the garage after rain. Ventura’s winter storms push water sideways against door bottoms. A flattened seal can’t redirect that water, and you’ll see a wet line across the garage floor after the first real downpour.
  • Leaves, dust, or debris accumulating just inside the door. When the seal no longer sits flush against the concrete, air pressure pushes fine debris under the door constantly. If you sweep the garage and it’s dirty again two days later, check the seal.
  • The seal has pulled loose from one end of the retainer. This happens when the aluminum channel gets bent by a car tire or a lawn mower handle. The rubber itself might be fine, but if the retainer is damaged, the replacement needs to address that or the new seal won’t stay put.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Ventura, a Craftsman weather seal replacement with installation typically runs $90 – $180, depending on door width (single vs. double), seal profile, and whether the retainer channel needs repair or replacement. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Bottom seal material (Craftsman-compatible): $25 – $60 depending on width and profile
  • Retainer channel replacement (if bent or corroded): $30 – $70
  • Labor (removal, prep, installation, adjustment): $35 – $75

Every price we quote is written down and handed to you before any work starts. No verbal estimates, no surprise line items. The install includes removing the old seal, cleaning the retainer channel, sliding in the new seal, trimming it to flush fit at both ends, and testing the door’s closed position to confirm the seal contacts the floor evenly across the full width. If the seal fails within 365 days of the repair date, we come back and replace it at no charge. That’s in writing on every job we do in Ventura.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a bottom weather seal is one of the few garage door jobs a careful homeowner can do without special tools. The risks are low: the door stays on its track, you’re working at floor level, and there’s no spring tension involved in the seal itself. The challenge is getting the right seal profile the first time and dealing with old, corroded retainer screws that strip easily.

Where DIY goes wrong in Ventura: buying a universal seal online that’s slightly too narrow for the retainer, so it sags and lets debris in anyway. Or using pliers to yank the old rubber out and bending the aluminum channel in the process, which then requires retainer replacement. If the retainer is damaged, you’ll want us to handle it – straightening extruded aluminum without the right technique usually makes it worse.

If you’d rather spend the afternoon doing something besides fighting a stripped screw at floor level, call (559) 239-8293 and we’ll schedule a time. You’ll get a written price before we touch anything.
