We stock and install Clopay-compatible torsion springs on our trucks, and most replacements in Ventura run between $180 and $340 fully installed, parts included. Same-day service is realistic for most spring failures, and since this is a repair we treat as urgent, we carry the common Clopay wind sizes and wire gauges so we don’t have to schedule a second visit. The way you’ll usually discover a failed spring is unmistakable: a bang that sounds like a firecracker going off inside your garage, followed by a door that won’t lift more than a few inches no matter how hard the opener strains.
Here’s the part itself, in plain English. A torsion spring is the large, tightly wound coil mounted horizontally above your garage door, running across the top of the opening. It stores tension and does the heavy lifting when the door opens. Clopay doors use either one spring, centered above the door, or a pair of springs, one on each side of the center bracket. When it breaks, the door becomes dead weight. The opener can’t compensate for that, and forcing it will burn out the motor or strip the gears.
Which Clopay Models This Applies To
Clopay’s residential lines include the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, Bridgeport, and Canyon Ridge series, all of which use torsion spring systems with a few variations. The compatibility question comes down to three things: the door’s weight, the spring’s wire gauge, and the number of turns wound onto the spring at installation. A spring for a 16×7 Clopay Classic steel door isn’t the same as one for an 8×7 Canyon Ridge carriage-style door. The wood-composite Canyon Ridge doors weigh substantially more, which changes the spring spec.
You can identify your door by the label. Clopay stamps or stickers a serial number and model designation on the inside of the door panel, usually near the hinge line on the bottom section or along the top edge of the frame. If that sticker is gone or faded beyond reading, a technician can still match your spring by measuring the old one: inside diameter, wire diameter, overall length, and wind direction, left or right. As for the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Clopay doesn’t manufacture its own springs. They source them from the same spring makers that supply the aftermarket, so a quality direct replacement from a known manufacturer performs identically. We stand behind what we install either way, and we won’t put a spring on your door that wasn’t matched to the door’s exact weight.
One note for Ventura homeowners: Doyle Garage Doors Ventura is an independent service provider. We’re factory-trained on Clopay products, but we’re not a Clopay corporate entity or an authorized agent. What that means for you is we stock both OEM-equivalent and quality aftermarket springs, and we’ll match the spring to the door, not to a brand-approved price list.

Signs Your Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
- You find a visible gap in the coil. A torsion spring under normal tension is a continuous coil. When it snaps, you’ll see a break in the helix, often a one-inch to two-inch separation between the broken ends. If you see that gap, the spring is done, full stop.
- The door feels heavy when you disconnect the opener. With the opener released, a properly sprung Clopay door should lift smoothly with one hand and hold its position about halfway up. If it slams down or feels like dead weight, the spring has lost tension, either because it’s snapped or because it’s fatigued past usefulness.
- The opener strains and the safety reverse kicks in. When the spring fails, the opener’s motor works against the full weight of the door rather than the counterbalanced weight it was designed for. You’ll hear the motor labor, see the rail flex, and often trigger the opener’s built-in resistance sensor, which sends the door back up.
- The door is crooked in the opening. On twin-spring Clopay doors, one side can fail while the other spring keeps working. The result is a door that lifts unevenly, binds in the track, and grinds the rollers against the rails. Leaving it that way scores the track and flattens the rollers.
- Cables are loose or dangling. When the torsion spring breaks, the lifting cables lose their opposing tension and can unwind from the drum. You’ll see a loose cable hanging slack along the track. If you see that, do not operate the door. The remaining tension in the system needs to be released properly, not by force.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Ventura, a single-torsion-spring replacement on a Clopay door typically lands between $180 and $340, parts and labor included for most standard-height doors. The range is driven by a few things: the spring’s wire gauge and length, which depend on door weight, and whether your door has one spring or two. A pair of springs runs toward the upper end because you’re paying for two springs and the labor to balance both sides. We always give you the written price before turning a single bolt, and that price is the final price unless you request additional work, in which case we write that down separately before proceeding.
Every Clopay torsion spring replacement from us includes new spring or springs matched to the door, rebalancing of the full system, lubrication of the bearings and rollers, and a written 365-day guarantee. If that spring fails within a year of installation, we come back and replace it at no charge. No service call fee, no parts charge, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. The dangerous part of a torsion spring is the stored energy in the coil. Even when the spring looks broken, the winding and unwinding process involves a level of torsional force that can break bones or worse if a winding bar slips. This is not a task where a YouTube video substitutes for the three or four hundred spring replacements a technician does before he’d call himself good at it. We’ve seen the aftermath of DIY spring work in Ventura garages: bent winding bars, cracked spring cones, and one door that came off its tracks entirely when the tension released sideways.
What you can safely do: disconnect the opener using the red release handle and test the door’s weight by hand so you can describe the symptom to us accurately. Take photos of the broken spring, the spring bracket, and the label on the door panel if you can find it. Then call us. Aaron Teague and his crew run Clopay spring replacements all over Ventura, from the hillside homes in Ondulando to the beach-adjacent properties near Pierpont Bay, and we’ll tell you what’s wrong, what it costs, and when we’ll be there.
FAQs
A standard Clopay torsion spring is rated for roughly 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which translates to 8 to 12 years for most Ventura households, though salt air near the coast can accelerate corrosion on the spring’s surface and shorten that lifespan if the spring isn’t kept lubricated.
If your spring failed early, we’ll inspect the door’s balance and the quality of the original spring, and we’ll match the replacement to your actual usage pattern so you’re not back in the same spot in two years. Call (559) 239-8293 and we’ll check it.
No. A torsion spring that has snapped cannot be welded, spliced, or re-tensioned safely. The structural integrity of the coil is gone, and any attempt to repair it is a genuine safety hazard. Replacement is the only correct fix.
We carry the common Clopay spring sizes on the truck, so in most cases the replacement happens the same day you call.
Most single-spring replacements take 45 minutes to an hour. A twin-spring replacement on a heavier Clopay door typically runs 60 to 90 minutes, including full rebalancing, cable check, and lubrication.
You’ll get the written price before we start, and the technician will show you the door in operation before he leaves.
We stock a range of common Spring Wire diameters, inside diameters, and lengths that fit most residential Clopay doors, including the Classic, Gallery, and Coachman series. For rare or heavy configurations, we source the exact match same-day through our local Ventura suppliers.
We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, so if the spring failure damaged your opener’s gear or carriage, we can address that on the same visit.
