Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible cable and drum assemblies for most residential models, and the typical installed price in Ventura runs $130 to $250 for cable replacement and $180 to $340 when the spring or drum needs work at the same time. Most Clopay cable and drum jobs we handle are same-day or next-day, because the parts are on the truck. You usually find out a cable has failed the hard way: the door hangs crooked, jerks on the way up, or one side sits an inch higher than the other. That’s the cable and drum working against each other, and every cycle you run makes the damage worse.

Call (559) 239-8293

When that happens, you want to know three things. What broke, what it costs, and who’s coming to your door. We’ll cover all three below, and if you want a straight answer right now, call (559) 239-8293. A real person picks up, day or night.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses a few cable and drum configurations across their residential lines, and knowing which one you have matters for a clean swap. The most common setups we see in Ventura homes are the torsion system on Clopay’s Classic, Gallery, and Bridgeport series, plus the extension-spring rig on older Clopay IntelliCore and Value Plus doors from the 1990s and early 2000s. The drum itself is not universal: Clopay doors with 1-inch torsion shafts take a different drum than the 1-1/4-inch shaft on heavier doors, and mixing them up puts the cable out of track by the second or third cycle.

If you open your Clopay owner’s manual, the part number for the drum is usually printed on the inside cover or the last page. No manual? Look at the drum itself: the part number is stamped into the face of the drum on most Clopay units from 2005 onward. The cable length is determined by door height, not model, so a 7-foot door takes a roughly 8-foot-6-inch cable assembly, and a 8-foot door takes a longer one. We carry OEM Clopay cables and drums plus aftermarket equivalents from suppliers who build to the same gauge and drum diameter. For anything still under Clopay warranty, we recommend OEM parts so the warranty stays intact. Older doors out of warranty do fine with quality aftermarket components, and we’ll tell you the difference before we quote anything.

One thing worth knowing if you’re just now researching: Doyle Garage Doors Ventura is an independent service provider. We’re factory-trained on Clopay equipment, but we’re not affiliated with Clopay corporate. That means we can be straight with you about when OEM matters and when it doesn’t.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs visibly crooked when opening or closing. This is the classic cable failure signature. One cable has snapped or slipped, so the working side lifts faster than the dead side. The drum on the broken side isn’t taking up cable anymore, and the door twists in the track.
  • You hear a loud snap, then the door slams or drops to one side. When a cable lets go under tension, the sound is unmistakable. The drum releases the cable and the weight shifts instantly. If this happened and you kept pressing the opener button, you may have also bent a track or torn a bracket.
  • Frayed cable strands are visible near the bottom bracket or the drum. Cables don’t usually fail without warning. They shed strands first. If you see loose wires sticking out of the cable bundle on either side, that cable is running on borrowed time. In Ventura’s coastal air, we also see accelerated corrosion on cables in homes within a mile or two of the ocean, and that rust makes fraying faster.
  • The drum shows wear marks, grooves, or a cable that’s spooling unevenly. A worn drum lets the cable stack on one side or bind. You’ll see the cable riding up over itself rather than wrapping in clean, flat rows. Aaron Teague has replaced drums in Ventura that were so grooved the cable was sitting in a channel deep enough to hide a pencil, which throws off the lift angle every time the door moves.
  • The door jams partway up, then reverses or stalls. A slipping cable means one side travels faster than the other. The door racks in the track, the opener senses the resistance, and it reverses or gives up. You might clear it once, but it’ll jam again, usually worse.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Ventura, Clopay cable replacement alone typically runs $130 to $250 installed. If the drum is grooved or seized, add the drum and you’re looking at $180 to $340 for the complete cable-and-drum job. What pushes the number toward the top of the range: an 8-foot door, a door with an opener-driven cycle count in the thousands, or cables that have been run for weeks after fraying started and have damaged the bottom bracket or track as well.

What’s included: the replacement cable or drum, removal of the failed part, installation and tensioning, a full cycle test (door opens, closes, balances, reverses properly), and a written price handed to you before we touch a bolt. No verbal quote, no “we’ll see when we open it up.” The written price you see is the price you pay. Every repair we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within 365 days from the date of repair, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing too.

You’ll also get a breakdown of parts versus labor on the invoice. Most Ventura homeowners don’t ask for it, but we give it anyway. If a cable lasts five years and a drum lasts fifteen on a seaside door, you should know what you paid for each.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest version. You can safely check a few things yourself: look for frayed strands, see if the cable is spooling unevenly on the drum, and confirm whether one side of the door sits higher than the other. Those observations help you describe the problem accurately when you call.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt the repair yourself. Clopay cables and drums live under serious tension. The torsion spring that counterbalances your door is wound with enough stored energy to sever fingers or worse if it lets go. Even if you’re replacing “just” a cable, you’re working next to that spring. There’s a reason garage door techs carry two winding bars and a healthy respect for what happens when a spring unloads. We’ve also seen DIY cable jobs where the homeowner got the cable length right but the drum set screw wrong, and the drum spun off the shaft on the first cycle. The door came down fast. That’s not a risk worth taking when installed replacement costs what it does.

If the door is stuck open or the cable has snapped and you can’t close it, call (559) 239-8293. We’ll walk you through getting it secured until a tech arrives.
